Commercial Usenet News Servers

Occasionally I get email requests for a reference to a good site that provides news access for a fee. I have listed several commercial servers on this page, and I hope that I can add more later. I plan to setup a special search for the various pay sites that will allow us to index them on a daily basis just like I do for all the free sites.

Update and Performance List

Active file transfer New articles per sec
Last Active ReadNumber of servers

In the table below, if there is not information in a field, it doesn't mean anything specific. Some services I just haven't had time to look at yet, others don't give me enough access without joining to see what they really have to offer. If I don't make a comment it usually means that I had no real opinion about the service, they were just "average".

They have a very impressive appearing configuration. Also, with the separate names based on the DS3 connection, users can use traceroute (or connect using all 3), to get the best possible connections.
I have just been setup to connect to them for a couple of days. I will provide a little more information about them when I have had time to really put them to the test.

$23.95/month for 15 connections

Unlike most of the other usenet providers out there, Megabitz does not keep all of the junk groups. Their active list only contains 27,000 active groups. This will help speed up your download of the active list. In addition, the other 80,000 groups are usually only posted to by spammers anyway, so you won't waste your time looking for content that doesn't exist.

MegaNetNews Meganetnews.com is a Professional Usenet News Service that offers exclusive features you will not find anywhere else!! Because Usenet News is our ONLY business, we are DEDICATED to providing one of the most POWERFUL and FEATURE PACKED Usenet sites on the internet.
3 Uncensored Servers $5.95
and up

I am putting MegaNetNews back up in the top part of my listing. They have contacted me and re-created my login information. During the move to their new servers they seem to have lost my information.

I still say caveat emptor, but things are looking up
MegaNetNews has recently restructured their news service. They are now operating their own private news servers. They currently have 3 servers. They also have a web2news interface that will be available shortly. At present, you must use their servers by number, but when they get everyting in the DNS working, you will be able to hit the machines by name. They also seem to have a lot of plans for the future according to what they told me in email.

The table below contains links to sites that archive pictures, sounds and video from the Usenet News Groups. They then sell access to their archives. If you just want the binaries, and don't want to mess with a News Reader (or missing parts, etc), these are a good alternative.

Binary Archives

URL Their description of themselves Services Provided Monthly Fee
Usenet Pictures     free non-adult images
$5.00/month adult
This is my site for Usenet pictures and other binary files. Maybe not a very accurate name for describing it, but you get the idea. I archive images, videos, sound files (no MP3 currently), executables, ROM images for MAME, etc. I also keep multipart RAR and ZIP files, and other support files, such as PAR2 files for repairing your multi-part downloads. Most PAR2 files are available in the non-adult area because you have to download the other normal parts from somewhere else for them to be useful.
Gigantic Usenet Binaries Archive     $10.00
As far as I can tell, this site is strictly devoted to pictures and other binaries which pass around the internet. It even provides a page containing thumbnails of some of the recent images in each of the "groups". As far as news articles though, I don't think there is anything to read.
Thumbnail-Pictures Thumbnail picture galleries for viewing and downloading; all from usenet newsgroups.

The sites listed below provide usenet news scanning services. These web sites allow people to create a list of search terms for news messages that they are interested in. They then send an email to the user listing the messages which they located for them.

McCane Consulting FREE Web-based Newsgroups (Text Only)   Free (for now)
I am currently in the process of developing this web-based news reader. In order to help me debug/improve it more quickly, I have left it free/open to the public. It does not currently support decoding/displaying binary attachments in messages. I will probably add this feature in the near future and make it available to paid subscribers.

I was recently contacted by someone from Airnews who told me they have been going through a bunch of upgrades and improvements. They also asked about indexing, so I will try to get them added RSN.
Alibis.com Over 90,000 totally uncensored Usenet newsgroups. AOL, MSN and CIS compatible. Compatible with all ISP's. This company seems a little too pricey for my tastes. I have joined their affiliate program, but I have put them down here because I don't have a free account and cannot index their servers to let people know how well they stack up.
newsgroup-binaries.com Newsgroup-Binaries.com provides the fastest, most reliable USENET access to thousands of *binaries* newsgroups; cd.image, iso, dvd, mp3, exe, mpg, avi, yEnc to name a few. Our retention and completion rates are more than competitive. We also protect your privacy by not logging uploads or downloads to the newsgroups.

$9.95

This company looks pretty good to me. I have excellent ping time to their servers. They have a single server, which is usually an indication of the better services. And I think that 8 simultaneous connections to the servers, which should allow excellent download speeds, is the highest I have seen on any commercial server.

Tera News Service appears to be gone... for now I would recommend that you avoid them until I hear otherwise.

USENETSERVER We're located in Atlanta, GA with direct peering to both Mae-East and West   $6.95 AutoBill
This company provides a good service at a reasonable price. They have over 50000 groups, and great performance downloading the active file and articles. I also have a deal with them to pay me a commission for any new customers I pass to them using the link above.
Altopia Corporation Multiple T3 and T1 lines to various backbones (UUNET, Sprint, C&W, AGIS, Netcom, PSI) plus a connection to the Seattle Internet Exchange with peering to AboveNet and Epoch, among others. Orientation towards freedom and privacy, with care given to quality and anti-censorship. Partial feed (no binaries) $6.00
and up based on transfer speed
Full feed $12.00
and up based on transfer speed
I emailed with someone at Altopia and now feel much better about how they run their service. A customer chooses how much they want to pay for service based on the speed that they download articles. The server then throttles their account back whenever it is going too fast. Also, free agent can be used, but you need to manually select the articles that you want to read. In other words, you should not setup your machine to pull down an entire group every night.
If you send any advertisments and someone complains you will be charged $10/complaint and lose your account, but they said that you will not get bumped for frivilous complaints.
Barditch News Server This is a high quality, members only, alternate news service that is compatible with all popular news readers and is available from anywhere on the Internet. ... This server is also one of the most spam-free servers available today and has about 98% removed. "SPAM Free" news groups $15.00
Spam-Free basically means censored (not that I really mind avoiding all those junk messages). The big difference is that they are blocking messages because they are advertisements, not because of the the legality/illegality or offensiveness of their content.
This server will also charge you $25.00 for any "commercially motivated" posting and terminate your account immediately.
Easy Usenet   Web-based news reader $9.95

Newscene Newscene is a premium Usenet news service with over 46,000 newgroups. Newscene offers complete anonymity with its news services. Partial Feed no binaries $6.00
Full Feed $12.00
Only 1 IP connection per user account at a time. No more than 4 simultaneous connections per user at a time. They run Spam filters on postings.
